Galactic Alignment
The author John Major Jenkins proposes what may seem like an opposing view of what the Mayan Prophecies for 2012 are about. His books Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and Galactic Alignment propose a significant Cosmic event that will happen on 21 December 2012, the Galactic Alignment. This page gives a very brief overview of what John proposes.
I highly recommend you read John's books as I find them engaging, eminently readable and very detailed in the referencing of other material. It's like reading a thesis, but a compelling and interesting one (apologies to those people who have written interesting theses but most are a bit dry). In reading Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 I felt that I was also getting a summary of 50+ other books and the bibliography gave me hundreds of places to go to read more about the subject. I recently got the Pyramid of Fire, written by John in his excellent style which he has used to present and analyse a translation of an Aztec Codex by Marty Matz. It is not a starter book by any means, but if you are fascinated by Mesoamerican culture it really is a must read: like a fabulous metaphor the Pyramid of Fire will resonate within you.
Galactic Alignment in a nutshell
John's proposal is pretty simple. Every 26,000 years (approximately) the winter solstice sun will rise and eclipse the Galactic Centre. The mayans were not only able to work out that this happened, they also:
So in essence John presents a 65 Baktun or 5 Long Count cycle between the Galactic Centre aligning with the winter solstice sun. His books go into the evidence supporting this proposal and why this alignment is considered so important by the Mayans.
Thoughts on Galactic Alignment
I find John's proposal pretty convincing. If we are to get a consciousness turbo boost on 21 December 2012 when Bolon Yokte K'uh comes down, an alignment with the Galactic Centre from which our whole galaxy sprung would certainly fit. It also feels very right and Mo confirms it to be correct. The things that resonate well with me are:
So in a paradigm where we have the capacity to all be galactic beings linked to the centre of our galaxy by our kuxan suum, an alignment of that centre with the rising sun on the winter solstice seems like an opportunity for something very cool indeed to happen......

The Galactic Alignment theory gives us a cycle and a reference point of 21 December 2012. The nine underworlds give us an evolutionary cycle of 19 biliion years ending on 28 October 2011. As presented by their proposers they do not fit.
But if the Nine underworlds were to operate over the same period as the Galactic Alignment - 65 baktuns, and the end date were to move closer to the galactic alignment date - 13 Ajaw - 14 July 2012, they start to converge. The unexplained piece is how the two link, as there is a 160 day difference between the end of the nine underworlds and the galactic alignment.
Convergence is close.

- predicted the event on the Tortuguero Monument - 4 Ajaw 3 K'ank'in;
- created the long count calendar so that it would end on the alignment date;
- chose the length of the long count to represent one fifth of the time between alignments.
